Abstract

The formation of an index verborum prohibitorum constitutes a certainly controversial idea, which is considered by the historical review of logical empiricism as a mere curiosity, as an accessory feature of Neurath’s philosophy of science. But can we preserve the Neurath’s philosophy of science, consider it to be a lucid anticipation of contemporary philosophical conceptions, attribute it an indisputable validity and, at the same time, resign the index verborum prohibitorum? In this work, we consider that the answer is negative. The index cannot be resigned because it is closely related to other fundamental features of Neurath’s philosophy of science, such as its non-Cartesian conception of scientific language, its encyclopedic conception of knowledge and its pluralistic conception of rationality.
