Abstract

This article analyses the process of political renovation that occurred after the shipwreck of the Sea Adventure, which carried the new authorities of the young English colony of Virginia in July 1609. During the Age of European expansion, any shipwreck represented a liminal experience, an irreversible point in which the social order of the colony, along with its hierarchies, was challenged by its actors. Particularly in the case of the Sea Adventure, its shipwreck opened an array of possibilities to those travellers who saw in the prodigious nature of Bermudas the pretext to avoid the political and social control of the colony, which led to a serious crisis of authority. This work sheds light on the authoritarian order imposed on the settlers both in Bermudas and Virginia since May 1610. This despotic government not only dissuaded possible mutinies and seditions that were in fact the major threats of the colony, but also established a compulsory labour regime focused on productive and military tasks and a rigid religious discipline.
