Spaces of hotel capital:
the Caribbean beach enclaves
Keywords:
Foreign investment, Tourism development, Corporate territory, Caribbean, Sun and beachAbstract
For decades, most of the countries and territories of the Caribbean region have registered sustained growth in international tourist flows and sectoral foreign investment. This process, mostly oriented to tropical beaches, has reconfigured spaces and societies. Much of the literature on the subject and the case study have been devoted to describing the phenomenon without delving into the contradictions that result from the development of tourist enclaves. Based on this characterization, the article aims to contribute to the critical study of the phenomenon, focusing on the socio-spatial analysis of hotel corporations, their forms of construction and governance of the territories, the contrasts they encourage and the alliances built with national and neo-colonial states. As a hypothesis, it is argued that tourism capital in the region subordinates the interests of the whole to the expectations of entrepreneurs in the sector. Methodologically, qualitative and quantitative methods were combined to dimension materials and symbolic aspects of the case. In conclusion, we reflect on the problem of tourism development and the challenges ahead in the region.
