Abstract

This study aimed to identify and quantify the determinants of investment in education for Brazilian families with children who are students or not, but able to receive basic education. The econometric procedure used was the Heckman two-step method. The results show that the decision of families to invest and the volume of investment in education are influenced by the proportion of children and adolescents in the family, family income, attendance and non-attendance in public schools, the condition of the child, and the region of residence. The interaction variables between the race of the head of household with family income and the female single-parent family arrangement with family income were also significant.
