Abstract

The discussion about the possible problems caused by low environmental quality has been highlighting recently. According to the report “Healthy Environment Healthy People” there is a strong relationship between environmental quality, health and well-being, and 12.6 million of the world’s deaths are caused by environmental problems. This paper aims to construct an environmental quality index (EQI) for the cities of Rio Grande do Sul through a factorial analysis, that identify the environmental conditions of those cities. A spatial analysis of the exploratory data was also performed, allowing the visualization of the relations between EQI and the characteristics of the spatial clusters. The results indicate that the average EQI of the state is considered high and that the cities with the highest and lowest index are Canguçu and Porto Alegre, respectively.
